Portfolio Assignment One

Part 1: Strategy

1. In my portfolio I believe that my family and friends are expecting to see references to some of my likes, like video gaming and creating videos. I like classic video games such as Super Mario and Pokémon. This means that perhaps the whole portfolio will play out like a vintage Game Boy Colour video game.
2. I think what will surprise people the most are my varied interests. For example, I love video games and computers, but I also adore history and ancient Greek and Roman mythology. I hope to communicate this variety to my audience. I think that this might make me stand out because I’m not afraid to try out new themes when creating my artwork since I have interests in many areas.
3. My audience will just be my family and friends as a way to express myself and my creativity. I would like my portfolio to seem very organized and to play out smoothly, but still have surprising elements and an exciting feel to it. I want the portfolio design to be as interesting as the art and work displayed within it.
4. Because this is solely for family and friends, quality and craft will rank priority over clear communication. I want my portfolio to be easy to navigate, but also have small points of interest besides just looking at the art, such as animations from games such as Pokémon and Mario. I don’t need to have everything straight to the point and want to encourage exploration within my portfolio.
5. I expect that my audience is looking for creative and original ideas. They would want to see that I can create new and surprising things and I want to impress them with my imagination. I would rather have my art be seen as whimsical and fun instead of something that has been done countless times before.

Victorian --> Wallpaper, grungy old distressed paper, candlelight, teacups, old skeleton keys

Rainbow Raven Edit

Made from a regular picture of a forest. Tinted some of the colours, added a gradient, and stacked some brushes on.

Animation?

I hope that this works, but I don't know! There isn't enough space on the S: drive.

MEDIA ARTS: Behind the Scenes at SHHS Yearbook Design

1. What do you like most about your designs?

I really like how all of the colours tie in together and with the school colours, because I stuck with a general scheme of red, black, and white. I also like how I used the clapboard in the title page to put the school information in. I’m happy with how the film reel on the art page turned out, because with all of the skewing it looks like the pictures are actually on the film reel. I think that I did a good job making the ‘Admit One’ tickets (especially adding the shadows in) and I think that it was a good idea to introduce the topic of that page.

2. What do you think could be improved about your designs?

I think that in the “Heart of Art” Cabaret page I needed more elements that could be faded in the background or more brushes to make it more artistic. I also think that the film reel should have been better incorporated into the art page rather than just sitting on top of everything. I don’t know if I really like the popcorn texture on the title page for the words ‘Scenes’ and ‘At SHHS’, because it doesn’t match the ‘Behind the’ and makes it look out of place. I think that I also should have put a picture or two in the background of my Art page because it seems a little empty.

3. What do you think makes your designs unique and competitive to be selected for the real yearbook design? 

I think that my designs are unique and competitive because they incorporate many of the techniques we learned in class and it makes the school seem like it is in a giant movie, hence ‘Behind the Scenes’. Everything flows together nicely with the colour schemes and unifying theme. Everyone, male and female, has watched movies and probably even wanted to be a part of them, so I think that the theme will appeal to many people. The pages also have a sort of timelessness to them, because movies and theatrical productions have been a part of people’s lives for a long time, so the yearbook won’t get outdated quickly.
